This is a simple reminder to take extra precautions to prevent freezing as fall and winter sets in. As part of your lease agreement, it is your responsibility to prevent freezing. The damage that can be caused to property and belongings due to freezing and broken pipes is limitless so be sure not to open yourself up to any additional liability. Below is a list of a few things that you can do to help prevent freezing. 1) Detach all hoses from exterior faucets. (drain your hoses to prevent splitting). 2) Wrap any exposed pipes. This includes hose bibs, faucets and any exposed landscaping or hot tub tubing. Foam pipe/faucet covers are available at your local hardware store. 3) When away from home for an extended period of time, keep heat on at least 50 degrees and leave sink cabinets open. If you have a bathroom or sink in an area without a heater, be sure to leave the door and/or cabinet open and leave the faucet open to allow a slow drip. 4) If you are going to be away for more than a day or two, it is vitally important that you make arrangements for someone to check in on your home every day or two. In the event that there is a problem in your absence, early detection can save you thousands of dollars. I hope these suggestions help in keeping your home safe and secure. If you have specific questions on things to do, please email Paula@windermere.com and we will work together to devise steps for you to follow so you can properly winterize your home.
